The Royal Mint has introduced a special edition of the Britannia coin in 2023 to commemorate the accession of His Majesty King Charles III, featuring the effigy of the new King sculpted by Martin Jennings. The 2023 King Charles III 1oz Britannia gold coin is comprised of 31.1 grams of pure gold and has a face value of £100. As the Britannia coin is exempt from capital gains tax (CGT), it is expected to remain a popular choice for both collectors and investors in the UK. This latest addition marks a new chapter in the celebrated British coin series.
Since 2021, the 1oz Gold Britannia coins have been enhanced with advanced security features by The Royal Mint, including micro-detail waves in the coin's background, additional line work detailing on Britannia's shield, extra Latin text on the inner rim, and a changing hologram of a padlock/trident.
